It’s been two and a half weeks since my concussion. I went to the doctor last Thursday, and he did a series of tests to gauge my extremely minimal progress.
Fun facts that I learned during that appointment:
- I can’t balance with my eyes closed;
- I can repeat a series of four words backwards but can’t do the same with numbers;
- Not listening to medical professionals and instead continuing to read/watch TV/sneakily do a little work has not aided my recovery.
Yep. If there’s one thing I’ve managed to confirm over the past seventeen-ish days, it’s that I’m really, really bad at taking care of myself. That’s not to say that I haven’t drastically altered my routine, just that I haven’t altered it enough to make much of a difference.
In my defence, doing nothing is hard work. You might be surprised to learn that “nothing,” according to Science, doesn’t include lounging around playing video games and binge-watching Fresh Prince but is rather meant in the literal sense of the word. As the kind of person who’d normally have a documentary on in the background while simultaneously marking papers and eating dinner, I’m not convinced that it’s reasonable to expect myself, in this case, to fully obey doctor’s orders. However, in order to maintain the illusion that I’m trying to be obedient, I’m going to go have a nap.
