An Afternoon on the Town

My husband and I talked all summer about going to Koreatown, which is within easy, TTC-accessible distance of us and is the site of a few of my favourite stores, one of my favourite parks, and, importantly, a Baskin-Robbins. In other words, a trifecta of happiness.

This must’ve been the fourth or fifth Sunday in a row we had active plans to make a trip there. This time, we actually followed through, and it went better than I could’ve anticipated. The bus ride—my first in my wheelchair—was really smooth; I used a gift certificate to buy beautiful cards that I spent way too long choosing; I managed to escape the bookstore with only one paperback; and we ran out of time for Baskin-Robbins, but I made up for it by consuming half a pint of ice cream when we got home. We talked about normal life stuff. It was great.

At a certain point, I observed that it had been a year and a half, if not longer, since I’d visited that particular stretch of Bloor St. W., which used to be a regular destination. Sunday afternoon felt like a reclamation of what was and now is again. For both me and my husband, it was a huge morale and confidence booster.

I’ve been riding a “life’s good if you let it be” high lately, and while I recognize that I’ve been relentless in posting about it, I probably won’t stop because I’ve worked damned hard to get where I am, and I might as well obnoxiously enjoy the fruits of my labour. Sure, plenty of downs still accompany the ups. I’m choosing, though, to focus on the glory of every little win.

More exciting than it looks.
